Valentine Tree 2011

Valentine Tree

Yep that’s right.  We put up a Valentine tree.  This tradition began in 2006.   We had just moved to the DFW area November 1st–just in time to not be prepared for the holidays.

The first two months we lived here we were either traveling or had overnight guests every weekend except two!  It was busy, but I was also thankful because amid the sickness, a house in boxes, two kids adjusting to everything, and Jason’s stress over starting a new job, I always had something to look forward to.

Since our lives were so crazy, my Christmas decorations were limited to a beautiful wreath from my brother’s family that we placed over the fireplace, and various gifts we had received and placed on the mantle.  It was around this time that Faith asked me, “Mom it looks like Christmas, but where is the tree?”  And then for several days in a row she would ask, “Are we going to put our tree up today?”  Well, I had neither the time, nor the energy, nor would we be around to enjoy it, so I never gave in to putting up the tree, but it did give me a great idea.  After Christmas when all the trees were discounted I found a beautiful white tree and February 1st we decorated our first Valentine tree!

My poor little boy was sick.  I had to bribe him with chocolate to get the pictures.

Don’t think this is only for girls.  My little boy had the BEST time decorating the tree and first thing every morning he is the one that pesters me until I plug the tree in!

Bonus! And most people won’t think you’re strange at all! Here I’ve been celebrating “anti-Valentine’s day” for the last several years… We do invites with a little cupid who’s been shot in the back and everything… Ha ha ha… Each to his / her own…

Beautiful post. Our family hasn’t had a tree in a while. We used to do Christmas in July, though, because of several personal issues that kept coming up in winter.

Your children are absolutely gorgeous and hooray to you for grabbing an opportunity to show your children that life doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s! I’m all for living outside of the box!

Whata cute idea. I’ll have to mention this to my 11yr old. He LOVES decorating for any and every holiday and conned hubs into getting him a 6ft tree made of white lights. It sits in a box in the corner most of the year. This gives me some idea to keep him busy next snow pass.
