How to Sleep When Pregnant

Every pregnancy is different, they say, and every once in a while “they” get something right!  I am expecting our fifth child in about six weeks.  This is the first pregnancy during which I’ve had trouble sleeping.  Oh, I have heard other people complain about problems with sleep during pregnancy, but have never struggled with it…until now!  As soon as I lie down, this little guy decides to wake up, and I’m certain he’s going to be a boxer because, boy, he is getting a lot of practice!  Still, it’s not just going to sleep that is the problem, but staying asleep.  Sigh.

On Mattress Find I read that I should be sleeping on my left side.  Now I’ve always been told that it’s best to sleep on your side during pregnancy, but I didn’t realize that sleeping on the left side aids kidney function and may even aid in providing nutrients to the baby.  Maybe my baby is waking me up because he is uncomfortable. Or maybe Iโ€™m just waking up because I am uncomfortable.

This led me to question my mattress.  Mattress Find states that the average mattress lasts about 5 to 7 years.  I gasped!  My mattress, let’s see…has a history!  It came with my husband.  He used it growing up and…(wait for it) it was his parents’ mattress before that!  As a matter of fact, in the last year I’ve been noticing that it sinks in the middle, so in my sleep I wake up and fight to get myself back up my mountain edge where I’m not being squashed by my husband’s sleeping form.

Hmm, maybe it’s not so much the baby after all.  Clearly it’s time for a new mattress!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Mattress Find. The opinions and text are all mine.

We replaced our mattress when it hit 10 years. It was time!

We got a new mattress about 3 years ago and lately I had been waking up with back pain. I really hope it is due to being pregnant and not that we bought the wrong mattress. It is sad that a hospital bed has been more comfortable than our mattress at home. I also try to sleep on my left side, but find myself sometimes on my back or right side. But baby is doing well. So that is all that matters.

Very funny, Esther…that image of the pregnant lady struggling to roll back uphill in order to get up just slayed me! BTW – it is so funny because I’ve totally been there, done that. ๐Ÿ˜€ I hope you can get some rest, because, girl, you need it with 4-almost-5 kids! Have a great day!

You aren’t the only one who used a mattress for so many years. I dare say many people never thought about changing. We used our “new” mattress for at least 20 years. Hope you are getting enough rest to keep going!

Wow! I bet a new mattress would make a world of difference! Some purchases are just absolutely worth it.

Too funny Esther…I did the same thing..We got a new mattress last year it has made a world of difference. I couldn’t believe how long I had suffered a sore back from that mattress. We used ours for almost 20 years. Oh brother, if I had only known the differance it would make I would have gotten one sooner. They are so expensive though, but worth the sleep. zzzz

Boy do I know what you mean! And especially when you’re trying to store up on sleep for later ๐Ÿ™‚

I went to buy mattresses with my daughter, who’s getting married, and wow what a difference! I had forgotten a mattress could be like that!

It really made me realize how awful my mattress is.

As far as sleeping while pregnant, with my last one I had to sleep sitting up. I had a bad case of sinusitis, and being pregnant meant there were no safe medicines or herbs to take (Believe me, I asked EVERYONE).

So I slept in a lounge chair for the last few weeks…it was awful.

I gasped too when I read 5-7 years. Oh my, it was, I’m not even going to say how long that I had my old mattress. I was so cost conscience when I finally bought a new mattress and now I’m paying for it with back pain. I should have looked around a bit more and spent just a bit more to get what I really wanted. Good luck with your mattress search.

I’m a few weeks from having #8 – and this is news to me…I’m actually supposed to get sleep while pregnant??! ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes, you deserve a new mattress! John bought me a gorgeous new king-sized one when I was pregnant with #2 and we still love it – I may not sleep much, but at least I’m relatively comfortable while I’m awake. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sounds like the mattress problem in my family!!! Share, share alike!!! During my pregnancies, I ended up sleeping sitting up. Not just because it was more comfortable, but there was no other way for me to get myself up and off the bed if I didn’t.

I hope you DO get a new mattress! Our mattress came with my husband, and may have even got passed to him by parents. I never thought anything of it until a friend recently gave us an almost-new, barely used mattress. It’s INCREDIBLE! Even with waking up all night to nurse my baby, I wake up feeling SO MUCH BETTER! Get a new mattress, girl!

Not all mattresses are made the same. Actually lie down on the mattresses before buying. Who cares if people give you weird looks.

Well you are not the only one who uses a mattress for way too long. It is such an expense to make the plunge into a new one.

I hope you get better rest from here on out.
