The Dreaded Checkout Line

I took my youngest two to Wal-Mart one morning to get some grocery shopping done while my older two were somewhere else.  I woke up feeling a bit off, like I didn’t get enough sleep or something, so I was trying to rush through the store.  I’m not sure what I ended up with, but it was a cart full.

I scanned the check out counters, looking for one with the light on and nobody waiting.  Finally, all the way to the end I found one where there was only one person, and she was almost through.

I had loaded most of my things on the counter when the checkout lady said, “I’m sorry, but I’m closed.”  A myriad of thoughts went through my mind in that split second.  I was NOT happy.  I looked up at the light that I could have sworn had been on, but sure enough it was off.  Then I looked back down at all the groceries on the counter.

I wanted to pitch a fit, but I was just standing there dumbfounded, when the lady said, “Just kidding!”  After a few minutes she told me that she had been trying to make me smile, but that I laughed so hard I actually made her day!  I’ve always wondered what happened with the next customer she tried that on!

Ha! 🙂 That’s pretty cruel for a cashier to pull that on a mom!

Oh, that would’ve been terrible if you would’ve thrown a fit or something. Guess that’s a good reminder to always be pleasant and have a good attitude, not only to be an example to your children….but also because that could’ve been really embarrassing if you would’ve flipped out and she was only kidding. Still, not nice on her part :o)

LOL! I don’t think a lot of people would have found that as funny as you. Glad you both got a laugh out of it.

Good on her. I often thought the people in Walmart too serious. She brightened your day…what a sweet soul.

I’m glad you took it so well. I agree, a bit of a cruel
joke to play on a mom in a hurry. Maybe she really
had wanted to close her line but saw how upset
and conflicted your were and changed her mind.

I’m not sure I would have done well with that joke. My dark side would have came out 🙂

Mmmm… Pleased you handled it well. My default never used to be that positive, but after living in Madagascar I probably would have just shrugged and moved on to another counter. Well, I hope so.

Wow! Someone did that to me last week (only she wasn’t kidding), and I left my stuff and walked out of the store. I had only been standing there for 5 minutes wasting my time.

I have been on both sides of that issue! I have lined up in a line that was closed (and I could swear the light was on!) and I have been the cashier that had to tell customers that my line was no longer open. Not fun either way! Glad you handled it so well and she was only teasing!

Not funny. I would have gone ballistic. Well, not really, because I don’t do that — but I would have wanted to.

How funny! I like when people act goofy in public! But she might want to reconsider playing a practical joke on a pregnant woman!

Funny, but I know what kind of attitude I would have expressed before she got to the “just kidding” part! Definitely a reminder to watch those attitudes since the world is watching us!

HILARIOUS!!!! I love that clerk’s sense of humor — and am glad that you handled her joke well! 🙂 The rare, friendly Walmart clerk is truly a blessing!
