Schlitterbahn Women in Surf

Learn to surf at Schlitterban waterparks! I took my first ever surf lesson at Schlitterbahn Corpus Christi’s Women in Surf event! The truth is, surfing is never something I could see myself doing. I was crazy nervous! Have you tried surfing?

My family and I were invited to Waves Resort Corpus Christi featuring Schlitterbahn Waterpark as part of a partnership with  Schlitterbahn and Texas Travel Talk. The partnership included lodging, Schlitterbahn Waterpark tickets, and compensation for the trip. The opinions reflected are honest and based upon my own experience.

My First Surf Lesson

Two of my girls–Joy and Grace along with my niece Ashley came along with me on this girls getaway adventure. We woke up early to be at the park before it opened. Only the sound of the water kept those around us from hearing our teeth chatter. Our faces were serious and our knees trembled as we stood in line to face the wave and conquer our fear.

We received short instructions prior to our first attempt from mother/daughter duo Cathy and Morgan Seabert–body board Champions! We were instructed on how to hold the board, how to position our arms and legs, and where our torso should be on the board. It all seemed so simple, but would I be able to do it once I got there?

I watched the girls’ attempts first. Then it was my turn! “You mean I just throw myself out there?” I’m not that young anymore y’all! Ha ha!

“You can do it!” I was told. I didn’t really believe it. The entire world waited for me to throw myself into the current. I couldn’t keep them waiting. Whoosh I went down into the water with as much grace as a rodeo clown.

With another whoosh I was spit back up and beached like a whale. Ha ha. I had been too high on the board!

Once again I threw myself into the water and…I was doing it! I couldn’t believe it! I was riding that wave! The instructors on either side of me were saying something. It took me a minute to realize that yes, I could listen and stay on my board at the same time.

“Lean this way!” Magically I navigated left.

“Now that way, that way!” I was told as I neared the edge.

Then back and forth I went on that wave. I don’t know how many times. I never wiped out!! It felt like I rode the wave forever and began to worry that I was holding up the line. It was crazy exciting!

Finally, I just navigated one way until I edged out of the wave and stood up! It was the most exhilarating experience! I have never been any kind of a great athlete, and NEVER thought I’d actually be able to body-board. Ladies, if I can do it, you all can too. What’s more is I think you’ll love it!

On my next turn, I was encouraged to try a roll. If you know how nervous I was to throw myself into the water, then you know trying to roll was a stretch for me. This next time on the wave I didn’t feel like I had as much control as the previous time. I think my arms were just tired. I gave it my best shot and wiped our royally. Ha ha!You know what? Even wiping out was fun. Seriously, it’s the most fun I’ve had in a long time!

National Women Learn to Surf Week

Did you know that inland surfing was invented at Schlitterbahn New Braunfels? National Women Learn to Surf Week was inspired from seeing that boys and men mostly filled the lines to take surfing lessons. Surfing is a sport in which women also excel! To attract more women to get involved, Schlitterbahn has celebrated National Women Learn to Surf Week annually for the last three years. I love that they encourage girls and women to learn to surf on the world’s most perfect wave–the Boogie Bahn.

Learn to Surf at Schlitterbahn Corpus Christi Waves Resort

You don’t have to wait for next year’s Women Learn to Surf Week. Just get in line at the Boogie Bahn on your next visit to Schlitterbahn and all the fun can be yours!

So cool! I know my daughter would want to do this. I am not coordinated enough, but she’s pretty good with balance.

I have seen these “learn to surf” experiences at several water parks over the years but I am too much of a chicken to try it! I need to just do it!!

It looks really fun to try. I can imagine how many times you will fall off and lose balance during the lesson. That’s going to be so fun and challenging.
