In a recent post I told you about my husband trying unsuccessfully to sneak fish oil into my daughter’s chocolate milk! He was trying to get Omega 3s–what is considered to be the “good fat” into our growing girl. DHA is a major structural fat in the brain and eyes and is considered to be one of the most important Omega 3s. We were thrilled to find that Horizon Organic has a DHA fortified chocolate milk! It’s oh so tasty! My kids thank Horizon Organic–no more fish oil in their chocolate milk! In fact Horizon Organic goes to the fish’s source for their DHA, an algae plant that the fish consume, so it is vegetarian and has no fishy flavor!
Great sources of DHA are fatty fish such as salmon, trout, sardines, swordfish and mackerel and seafood such as shrimp, scallops, lobster and canned tuna. My husband loves for me to cook fresh fish. However, pregnancy and cooking fresh fish just have not mixed well for me, so I keep putting him off for a few more months. In order to get DHA Omega 3s into our diet we have been consuming a lot of tuna in the form of salads, sandwiches and casseroles. Below is a family favorite recipe.
Creamy Tuna Noodles Parmesan
2 cans of tuna, drained (7 oz. each)
8 ounces egg noodles (cooked according to directions on package)
2 ounces diced pimentos, drained
¾ cup Horizon Organic milk enhanced with DHA
1 ½ cups sour cream
The greens from two green onions
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
¼ cup dry bread crumbs
¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons melted butter
Mix all except the last three ingredients in a 2 quart baking dish. Mix the last three ingredients and sprinkle over the tuna mixture. Bake uncovered about 35 minutes or until hot and bubbly in a preheated 350 degree oven.
