At our house we have fun with food–plain and simple! Meal time is a favorite family time. I love trying new things and the kids all eat what I fix so they are exposed to a variety of home cooked, healthy food.
Dad has a lot of fun sneaking healthy things into their food. Sometimes it doesn’t quite work out. Like the time he put cod liver oil in my four-year-old daughter’s chocolate milk. She took one sip, made a face and declared, “I don’t want the fish!” Then there was the time he threw several leaves of lettuce into the fruit and yogurt smoothie he was making them, promising all the while that they wouldn’t taste a thing. The kids all cautiously took a sip, “Eww, it tastes like lettuce!” Sure enough it did! Usually though, he has better luck with his efforts.
I love making different shapes with food. I still think shapes are fun! With a few apple slices, some peanut butter, and a few mini marshmallows you can have hillbilly teeth.
Recently I made a veggie tree out of broccoli, carrot sticks, and a yogurt dip for a healthy snack. How much more fun to devour a “tree” than to just sit and eat some vegetables?
