Happy Mother’s Day!

To my mom on Mother’s Day!  It is only now that I am a mother that I have begun to understand your role.  I took you for granted as a child.  You didn’t love me less.

I remember one junior high conversation when I said, “Mom, it would be so sad if I died now, after all the money you spent on me!”   I remember because it brought tears to your eyes and you told me something about it not being about the money.  You weren’t counting the pennies and racking up how much I would owe  you.  That was so hard to understand at the time!

Thank you for being a godly example, for treating others with kindness when they weren’t kind to you.  Thank you for not gossiping about people even when I knew they were gossiping about you.  Thank  you for letting the little things go and not holding a grudge.  Thank you for reading your Bible every night.  All of these things and more shaped my life!  You are blessed!  Happy Mother’s Day. I love you, Mom!

Why, thank you,Esther! One of your sisters accuses me of “cursing” you, all of you. The first time she said that, I was shocked, but she explained, “You used to tell me you hoped I would have a child just like me some day.” This must have been when she was being difficult. That wish has come true for all my children, but it isn’t a curse. All four of you and all eleven+ grandchildren are the biggest blessing of my life after your wonderful father/grandfather, without whom, of course, I would not have had any of you.

It occurs to me to say one more thing–when you were in junior high, the money we spent on anything couldn’t have amounted to any prodigious amount. I don’t know what would have caused you to say that, but you were not unappreciative and never really expected a lot. I hope you have had a wonderful day.
