Here is yet another tale about Grace and her one liners that lighten the mood.
We were at a restaurant for lunch after church on Sunday. My oldest two girls were arguing back and forth, disturbing the peace. I reminded them of the Sunday school lesson of the morning.
“Did you learn about the fruit of the Spirit today?”
They nodded.
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, patience, kindness,” I quoted a few. “That means that those things are evidence of God in our lives. You know if people can’t see these things in us, then we are no different from anyone else. (I mentally reminded myself that this goes for me as well.) And you know I’m not seeing very much fruit in your lives right now.” I stopped talking, wondering if anything I said was getting through to them.
Then Grace said, “Only during nap time, Mom?”
We all laughed. Yes, Baby, sometimes it’s only during nap time when you are alone that I see any evidence of the fruit of the Spirit!

Love how you are always teaching them 🙂
I agree that I love how you are always teaching them.
That girl is a crack up. I think you’re in trouble 😉
Ha ha, she is too funny Esther! What a riot!
I love reading the funny stories of your witty kids, your adventures in Mexico, things you are going through now or have gone through in the past and how you always try to deal with them the way God wants you to, or the cute stories you tell of how much you adore Jason and your family. I look forward to grabbing a cup of coffee, sitting down and being able to read them. It’s some nice down time for me and I am able to learn a few things. Thanks, Esther! =)
LOL! I wonder if that’s what God thinks about us? We stay out of trouble when we’re sleeping 🙂
This cracks me up. I hate to take away any hope you might have but even my 18 and 21 year olds have been know to argue at the restaurant after church. Might just use your fruit of the spirit lesson on them! 😉
Haha! That reminds me of a plaque that my grandma used to have. It went something like, “I haven’t lost my temper or said anything I regret today. I’ve been patient and loving and kind. But now I’m getting out of bed, Lord, so I’m really going to need Your help to make it through the rest of the day!”
She is a riot, are you sure shes only four! Lol
Haha, oh I love this one! 🙂
Yes, I think the fruit of the Spirit shows up best when I’m asleep too. Unfortunately! It is definitely most lacking when I haven’t had enough rest, that’s for sure…
Love this!
My middle two are either best friends, or at each others throat….They will be first in line to care for each other, protect each other, and comfort each other… and then five minutes later they are bickering! Some days, it makes my head spin!
Love your daughter’s quip about “fruits of the spirit”….that sounds like something my little guy would come up with! He always keeps us laughing!
I remind my kids of this little quote too “Treat everyone with kindness, even those who are rude to you – not because they are nice, but because you are.” I tell them all the time “It makes God smile when you’re being kind.”
🙂
Thanks for sharing. Just a great way for me to remember that we are not alone on this parenting journey!
Too funny! It’s wonderful that you are recording all these funny moments – they are so fleeting!!
Great way to capture a teachable moment! Loved such a sweet response! Surely something to treasure.
Hahaha, that is so cute! I loved the funny things that my kids used to say when they were little! I also loved taking advantage of those teachable moments. Thanks for linking up to Making Your Home Sing Monday!
What a beautiful family you have!
