The Sea Turtles at South Padre

While we were on the Island we decided to go visit the Sea Turtle Rescue.  My mom had heard about the turtles and a lady at the hotel recommended we go see them.  There is a recommended donation of $3 per person which I thought was quite a lot for all my little kids.  We browsed the huge tanks and waited to see turtles coming up for a breath.  It was interesting to see the various turtles and learn about why they were at the hospital.  Toward the very end we took the steps down to the last tank and we found this big guy.

The kids were given pieces of lettuce to hold up to the glass.  The turtle came right up to it and kept trying to eat it!

They learned that this is a green turtle because it eats plants.

Can you tell I had a really hard time getting them to looking at me for the photo?

This turtle had a long tail that one of my kids pointed out.  The lady that worked there explained that’s how you know it is a male.  The female turtles have little short tails.  When the kids had had enough fun the were able to throw the lettuce up into the tank and watch it get devoured.  I thought the whole sea turtle center was worth it just for this turtle alone!

Looks like a fun time was had by all… The little chap looks quite bedraggled – did he take a dip in one of the tanks?

That’s so awesome! I love sea turtles-esp. the hatchlings–soo cute! Can’t help but think of Crush on Finding Nemo.
