The Potluck

Potluck

From the time I was a little kid I have always loved the shock factor.  Saying or doing something unexpected is great fun.  In the same way I find great humor when I am the recipient whether it’s an intentional act or not sometimes.  I tell you this story because I think it is hysterical.  I needed a good laugh this day!

Our family was having a great time at a pot luck.  The food was delicious, and rather than head to the dessert table when my plate was practically licked clean, I went back for a second helping of salad.  I had tried a couple of bites of one particular salad and hoped there would be some left over.  The salad was full of huge chunks of avocados, and I love my avocado!

I walked up to the table and sure enough there was about one helping left at the bottom of the bowl.  Yippee! I picked up the bowl and began scraping the green goodness together to spoon onto my plate.  A man was at the other side of the table taking some of a different salad.  “Oh, were you wanting some of this one?” I asked “I’m about to take the rest of it.”

He looked at it for a minute and then nodded, “Yeah, I didn’t get to try that one the first time around.”  Happy to share I handed him the bowl.  What happened next I remember as in very slow motion.  He took the bowl and tilted it toward his plate. With the spoon he dragged a small helping onto his plate, making sure to grab some avocado. I went as if to reach to take the bowl back, but he decided to grab a couple more of the chunks of avocados.  Then I watched as he slowly took all the avocados and the lettuce, and then he stirred around a few cherry tomatoes at the bottom of the bowl as if in indecision and then handed me the bowl!

Ah ha ha ha!  It was so unexpected! I was so incredibly shocked, and found it very hilarious. Somehow I kept from bursting out laughing as I didn’t want to embarrass him, but the lone tomatoes at the bottom of the bowl were not the least bit appealing.  What would you have done?

I put the bowl back down tomatoes and all and grabbed a different bowl of salad and said, “Well, I think I’ll try this one instead.”  But oh how I laugh every time I think of it.  I may think twice next time before offering to share the last of great food at a potluck. In fact, I think I’ll just take it and run!
