My mom Frieda is guest posting for me today. Here is a little tale about yours truly:
I hear the phone ring in the English department at Pan American University, where I work. Someone says, “Frieda, your daughter is on the phone.”
It is Esther, my first-grader. She asks, “Mom, how does the daddy cat make the mama cat pregnant?”
We live in the country, and there are a great number of mice, so we have several outdoor cats. Esther plays with the cats by the hour.
“Well, Esther, we’ll talk about it when I get home.”
“Okay, Mom.”
After supper I take out the book I have saved especially for this occasion. We read about flowers and pollen and bees. We read about birds. We read about dogs and cats. I take a deep breath and start to turn the page to read about people, but Esther says, “That’s all I wanted to know. Can I go play now?”
“Okay, Esther.”

Ha ha, I bet that was a relief 🙂
How much simpler childhood was in our times (Esther’s much younger than me, of course). Now most times, kids tell us what they know about the birds and the bees and we wonder where they get it from.
Thanks, Frieda. You’ve got a lovely daughter, son-in-law and grandkids…but I guess I don’t need to tell you that 🙂
That’s the greatest!!! HaHa I’m sure other parents aren’t so lucky
THat is hysterical!!! What a funny girl you were. I bet your mom was relieved!
In answer to Corinne: I know what you mean about simpler times. I was determined to be such an up-to-date mother, hence the book ready for the appropriate occasion. I let my own mother believe I learned the facts of life out of the Bible, neglecting to mention my girl friend at boarding school.
Smart call not to tackle that question over the phone!
Ah, I enjoy guest posts once in a while. Great to hear your point of view about your strange daughter, Frieda. May there be many more.
Ha! Good timing on that one!
Its like she knew just how much information she (and you) could handle. Funny story!
WHEW!! As a Mom I would be relieved! 😀
Haha, Frieda! Now we know where Esther’s kids get “it” from. 🙂
Haha I’ve heard this story so many times, but it still makes me laugh just as hard!! I can picture a Mini Aunt Esther saying that!! Too funny! <3 Glad you shared this here!!! haha
Hahaha! Yes, that timing must’ve been a big relief!
