The Baby Monitor: Friend or Foe?

Night after night I had been getting little sleep.  Jason Jr. was coughing so much in his sleep that he would wake up every little while crying.  One night I woke up because I heard him through the baby monitor yelling, “Mama, mama, mama.”   I listened for a minute, but didn’t hear any coughing.

I hoped that maybe he’d go back to sleep, but he kept calling my name over and over, so I got out of bed and walked upstairs.  Standing by his room I didn’t hear anything.  I waited.  Nothing.  I thought maybe I had waited him out and he had gone back to sleep, so I turned and walked back downstairs to my room.

Just as I was getting back into bed, I heard him calling again.  I stopped mid-stride.  How strange!  I started to head back upstairs, when through the baby monitor I heard a lady’s voice saying, “It’s okay, I’ll rock you for just a minute.”

How weird! Makes you wonder if someone else can hear your transmissions.

Hmm a little bit creepy actually!:)

It reminds me of those old fashioned crossed phone lines! I almost had a panic attack one evening when my conversation with my friend was interrupted by a man shouting into the phone suddenly “Who is this? Don’t you lie to me! Who are you?” I was like, I think we have a crossed line buddy.:) Pretty weird.:)

I think I would get paranoid about who might be able to hear everything I said in my own house.

My baby monitor use to pick up cordless phone conversations from neighboring houses. I finally just turned the volume all the way down. When one of my kiddos cried I could see the red lights start up. For some reason I would wake up to the red lights just like I would have if they volume had been up.

Kind of creepy but I remember that happening to us as well!

Believe it or not, we still have our baby monitor. It is pretty well buried, unused for a long time now. However, as my girls were growing up, when they were sick, I would use it to keep track of them.

Sounds like it would make for a good movie premise…

We live so close to my in-laws that we would keep a baby monitor up there for when we were hanging out while a baby was sleeping down at our house. I always had to be “nice mommy” at home, in case my in-laws forgot to turn their monitor off! =)

At first I didn’t get it. I thought there was another woman in your house. It wasn’t until I read the comments that I realized you were picking up the transmission of a baby monitor at another house. Funny!

At first, I thought you’d got a ghost! Our baby monitor had two different wavelengths so you wouldn’t pick up someone else’s monitor – with any luck! Also as Ruth says, you have to be careful what you say, my husband was once embarrassed by something I said about him while the monitor was on and he heard.

Well at least she was saying something nice. Remember wireless house phones – sometimes that happened too – one would hear others conversations. 😉 I’m glad it was only a parent talking. 🙂 Too bad you can’t change the channel on that. Did you recognize the voice as a neighbor?
Now at night – you can hear all sorts of radio stations even though one is 3000 miles away – 🙂 Maybe that’s what this is? LOL

So I wasn’t the only one not that familiar with baby monitors. Of course they didn’t have them when I had babies. But some day when you (hopefully) incorporate all this into your book you will have to say something like, “In the olden days when technology was not yet perfected…” or something like that.

My sister had the same thing happen to her but the mother on the other line wasn’t being as sweet to her child!

This is why I will never use a video monitor! You can imagine the monitor signals like any radio signal–if someone else tunes in on the right channel they can hear (or see) whatever you can. I don’t want to be broadcasting any videos. Hmmm…yet I have a blog. Yes, I do see the irony! Maybe I worry too much!

What the HECK?!? I would flip out.. We have a video monitor and it freaks me out when my newly adopted son sits straight up in the middle of the night and stares at me…, lol if I heard a voice I would run away abd never come back, the end.
