Recess–the word brings back so many great memories! When people asked me what my favorite subject was, I always answered, “Recess!” I didn’t understand why everyone thought that was so funny. It was perfectly logical in my mind!
I would work as fast as I could to get my work done in hopes that I might be the first in line for recess. I would run outside feeling the sun on my back and the wind in my hair. I was free! It was a time to play and be creative. Whether it was the hopscotch, tag, or monkey bars, I could be active, spending some of that pent up energy. That is, until the whistle blew to go back inside. Next came the rush to line up at the water fountain and then go back to our classroom to get back to work. I could hit the books with renewed enthusiasm. Sitting still was much easier after recess.
In the past twenty years, children have lost an average of 8 hours of recess a week.
