*I am sharing some of my daughter’s athletic achievements that I am most proud of as part of a sponsored conversation for Verizon’s #FiOSFootballGirl campaign. #PlayLikeAGirl
“Oh just wait till you have boys!” I used to cringe inwardly when I heard that comment implying that since my oldest three children were girls they probably just sat around quietly coloring, unlike my friends’ active boys. Clearly they did not know my girls! They play like a girl, but can be the farthest thing from calm and quiet.
From the time my eldest daughter was about two she eschewed dolls and dresses and much preferred rocks and dirt. While she is extremely competitive, her drive does come out more in quieter indoor games.
My second daughter Joy on the other hand will take anyone on anytime at pretty much anything. She is highly driven and thrives on competing. Although we knew this about her, it was amazing to see her compete and win her first trophy at her AWANA Club Sparkie Regatta, a competition where boys and girls compete by making and racing their boats. Well, she won her second year too.
And then her third year she not only won for her grade, but the all round race taking home two trophies! We couldn’t believe it! The next year when she was no longer competing I laughed when I got a message from a mom whose son was in the grade below Joy. Her son had won the competition! Then she added, since Joy wasn’t in it. Ha ha!
Next we placed Joy in basketball. We wanted her to have a positive direction for all that competitive energy. There were no trophies in basketball, but lots of healthy competition. It was her first season to play, and she had a lot to learn. By the end of the season she was the queen of defense.
The little girl with the ball in the photo had been the opposing team’s lead scorer. She was amazing. Then they put Joy on her in the final game of the season and she didn’t make a single basket! That’s my high energy, go getter girl.
Just recently Joy won a hoola hoop contest! More on that coming soon. She is very good at winning. We’re working on learning to lose graciously! 😉
There are so many girls out there that just like my daughter can benefit from some organized competition. I loved this Football girl video!
