This year for our traditional New Year’s Day meal I made a ham and Swiss fondue with bread, carrot, and apple dippers.
Everything is happening last minute right now which is driving me crazy because I am usually a planner. I ran out the day before to get the ingredients for our meal. I was only able to go to one store between baby feedings so I had to just get whatever was available. There was only one block of Swiss cheese in the whole store. I was dubious about it, but bought it anyway. What other choice did I have?
Well…it didn’t work. The cheese didn’t melt. I worked on it for over an hour and finally called my family to come eat. I had never had a fondue fail on me, but if it was going to fail, this was the year! We sat down and began trying to dip. “Mom, you made it too cheesy,” my seven year old innocently accused. I let her have it, poor thing. I gave a full minute lecture about how hard I worked and how she shouldn’t complain. The family all exchanged glances and must have made a silent pact because then one after another they all sang the meal’s praises.
“But it’s yummy.”
“It’s good. I like it cheesy.”
As they were trying to dip the various food items the cheese was stringing out across the table in multiple directions in globs. One of the kids proclaimed, “And much more fun!” There was a second of silence before we all broke out in laughter. It certainly was more fun!
Imagine stings like this in three and four directions! Thank the Lord for laughter!
Chocolate fondue with strawberries, rice krispys, pound cake, coconut marshmallows, strawberry marshmallows, and plain marshmallows.

I’m sorry – coconut marshmallows? I MUST try these!!!
That is awesome! I keep saying I am going to do that! Have you ever been to the Melting Pot?
I think this will be my next kid’s birthday theme.
It looked like a fun time anyhow!
Looks like a fun tradition. I know how frustrating it can be when things don’t turn out (especially when you are already feeling stress). The important part was you were all together and seemed to have a good time!
that is a fun treat for the kiddos
well this settles it. your house is waaaay more fun than mine! 🙂
Hey- we know you really planned things that way just so everyone could get to the chocolate fondue :).
That is a great idea…my kids would love it, no matter the consistency. I guess it falls under the general kiddo rule of thumb…the messier it is, the better it is…get some sleep. 🙂
Yummy! My kids love dipping fondue, too.
Oooooh…fondue…one of my favorite things on the planet…I eat fondue whenever I get the chance…and your fondue looks ah-may-zing! 🙂
Our family must know the same look. Mine share it when I share my thoughts sometimes. 🙂
At least you could still enjoy yourselves!
I know I’ve said this before but… Girl you have got to find a way to get into those pictures with your family. When they get older they are going to want their mama in the pictures with them. Most cameras have a timer for a reason… hint… hint…
I’ve never had fondue other than the dessert fountain kind and I LOVE that. My favorite is an odd pairing: chocolate fondue over cantaloupe. I never would have thought that would be a good combination but I had it at a restaurant once and I’ve been looking for it ever since. Usually, if they don’t have cantaloupe at the fondue dessert station (which they usually don’t) I’ll have strawberries and marshmallows. Yummy!
Looks like y’all had fun! What kind of fondue pot do you have? I’ve really been wanting one and can’t decide what to get.
Oh, we need to try fondue now! But your Swiss cheese incident has me a little nervous…
Yummy! It looks like the family had a blast. 🙂
That looks so delicious. The best fondue I ever had was oddly in Paris.
You’re so brave to try fondue at home, Esther! Fondue is one of our favorite celebration meals, but we let the restaurant take care of the cooking. Looks like you had a great time with your cheesy fondue! Have an awesome 2012! 🙂
Awesome! Again, you laugh in the face of disaster. I wish I’d been around your table — everything looks super yummy!
