Marriage and Music

My husband and I couldn’t be more different in our taste in music and how we like to enjoy it.  He likes loud screaming music among other rocky styles.  I can’t even understand the words, and with a house full of noise, it’s just more noise.

When he blares his music, I try to stand it as long as possible, but it sends me into orbit.  I literally, physically begin to feel like throwing things.  It’s not just a taste preference.  I mean, I really can’t handle it.  I thank the Lord that over most of the last fourteen years when I begin to come unglued because of his music, he just smirks at me and shuts it off.

He’ll play a song for me because he likes the tune; meanwhile, I’m looking for the message he’s trying to tell me, because when I play a song for him, it’s because I think of him when I hear the words, or it may be because the song expresses exactly how I’m feeling at that moment.

So when he played this song for me:

My Heartstrings Come Undone By Demon Hunter
“It’s buried deep within the past, i hope it doesn’t last
It’s something i already chased, i already chased
I try to give it all away, but it’s never gonna fade
It’s something i don’t wanna face, i don’t wanna face
I know you feel it’s all the same, but I promise that i’ll change
It’s something i already chased, i already chased
You know i’m trying to believe that you’re never gonna leave
It’s something i don’t wanna face, i don’t wanna face
There’s nothing left! The fear is gone
Oh, my heartstrings come undone
I will wait for you, pray for you
Before i make my final run
I will stay with you, decay with you
I know i’m not the perfect one, the pain has just begun
It’s something i already chased, i already chased
You bring me to a better path, it’s everything i asked
It’s something i don’t wanna face, i don’t wanna face
There’s nothing left! The fear is gone
There’s nothing left! The fear is gone
Oh, my heartstrings come undone
I will wait for you, pray for you
Before i make my final run
I will stay with you, decay with you”

I was kind of offended and wondered what in the world he thought was wrong.  I didn’t catch all the words and admittedly didn’t really grasp the meaning.  All I got from it was that he thought things between us were horrible, but that he’d pray for me…decay with me!

Poor thing…he just liked the tune!

My husband is not especially musical but likes things like Gregorian chants that I really don’t get. When I wanted to play “Like a Bird without Wings” for him, he couldn’t get past the vision of that poor bird. I never even had a mental vision of a literal bird without wings, just understood the figurative meaning.

I remember exactly one line of every song I hear. I can sing that line perfectly, but that’s it… I’m more of a tunes kind of guy – enjoying all styles, from Opera to pop to worship to screaming rock … but don’t ask me what they’re singing… I relate to Tim Hawkins the comedian who keeps changing song lyrics.

oh my goodness that is so funny.
You sound a lot like Dave and Me. I can actually feel my brain spinning in my head when his music is on. He’s not happy unless it’s so loud the whole town can hear it.

I like quiet. I never listen to music on my own except when I’m out running. Paul likes to have background noise at all times though. It’s always too loud for my tastes!

Ha ha!! My hubby and I normally like the same music, probably because we both like pretty much everything 🙂 But he likes some music that I just don’t get at all, oh well 🙂

It is the opposite with my hubby and me! Mine drives him a little crazy. But, I have a teenage daughter, and keeping up with what she is listening to is important to me. I care about the message, and he is just looking for a catchy tune!

My husband listens to talk radio — I have phases I go through where I’ll listen to music, then I don’t.

We have some common tastes in music — but lean towards more edgy stuff, where he likes the 60s and 70s tunes.

I love music. If I am not listening to my ipod then my computer is playing music, if not that then the tv is playing music videos. I don’t like it real loud though because I like to be able to hear whats going on around me like the phone ringing or someone knocking on my door.

wow! your husband listens to Demon Hunter?! That song “My Heartstrings Come Undone” is really good…its my favorite song from them. He might like “Carry Me Down”, “Deteriorate”, “The Tide Began to Rise”, and “Good to be Alive”. I get tired of people saying that metal is “loud”…its not loud it can be described as intense, hardcore, or fast. Unless the person means that the volume is high, then it can be “loud”. I love listening to Christian music…whether its on my Zune or laptop at college, when I’m driving, or playing video games at home. I also care about the message in the songs. I listen to every genre in the Christian music industry. I don’t really listen to music at a high volume unless I’m bumpin my speakers to Christian rap songs in my car. I’m surprised that your husband listens to Christian metal! What other genres of music does he listen to?

Me and my hubby both like wordship music like Hill Song and Don Meon and I love artist like Nicole Mullen and Kurt Carr and Isareal and New Breed, we both have our own different style of music and I can’t expect him to like mine or for me to like what he listens to, but we both can appreciate the difference. My gosh if we both enjoyed the same music and did not have a different style then something would be wrong. Because no one is that perfect!

I think it’s kind of sweet that he wants to decay with you:) And it’s definitely sweet he turns off his music when you’ve had enough. I’m grateful my husband will do the same–usually. Thanks for using my post today! Happy Presidents’ Day! Janae

I feel your pain! Mine likes it loud too. We usually like the same kind of music, only he likes it 100 decibels louder! :0)

Am house sitting with Craneberies, Queen, Tina Turner and 60’s rock music the only CD options. Oh, wait, there is one children’s disk too. Tried it out, knowing what it sounds like, and lasted about a minute. Heavy metal and rock are great … on a stage!

Poor thing!! He just wanted you to hear a good song!!! I think I’m more like you in the sense that I want to know the meaning in the song. But sometimes, there are those popular songs on the radio that catch me just because of the music. It will be my sister coming into the room with her nose upturned saying “What awful lyrics!” In those times, I’m thankful I have people like you and her in my family to sit me down and help me get past the music. After all, we certainly don’t need to be filling our heads with trashy words just because we like the tune. =)
