My tour of Lomax Farm was part of a familiarization trip with Cabarras County, North Carolina. All opinions are my own.
Lomax is a certified organic incubator farm located in Concord, North Carolina. It is a place where beginning farmers can train and gain access to land and equipment to start their own farm business. Farmers-in-training have a 3 to 5 year participation period and then Lomax Farm staff set out to help the new farmers transition to their own land.
I had the opportunity to hear the personal story of some of Lomax’s farmers. From some in the beginning stages of starting out with a small plot to those who have gone through the program and are in the process of phasing out into their own farms armed with all the knowledge, skills, and experience of success. The farmers at Lomax are very diverse in their history of what brought them there. For some it’s tragedy, others are professionals, but all have a dream to farm.
Starting small and going through a specific program with all the help, tools, and machinery readily available, farmers learn not only how to grow organically, but the financial aspect of farming that will help them succeed.
From flower gardens to fruits and vegetables and more–the beauty I found here is that everyone who wants to and is willing to complete the program can become the next generation of farmers!
Would you like to tour Lomax? Visitors are able to see the reality of what happens on at a sustainable small farm. Have you always wanted to farm? Do you have a young want-to-be farmer?
