After walking up to the Temple of Pan at Banias Nature Reserve we hiked down to the Water Powered Flour Mill. The walk was gorgeous. We had fun looking at the various plants and trees. It was especially fun to notice the fig trees, just seemed right!
We were there! Had to get a photo by the waterfall.
We learned a lot about Israel’s military on our tour. We saw groups of military various times throughout our trip. Here we were told that learning about Israel’s history is part of their training. This in one of their down days that they enjoy.
The water powered flour mill served the people of Israel until about 1986. It is the only known mill of it’s type that can still be operated. It is estimated to be a few hundred years old.
The following four photos are courtesy of Steve Hermann our trip photographer, who got some great shots of the inside of the mill. This is an old olive oil press, which used the water system for pressing the olives and for a secondary extraction of the olive oil. The process for this is “Matroof” in Arabic that is why it is called a Matroof Mill.
I think it is so interesting to learn about how things were done hundreds of years ago without our modern technology.
Next we saw ruins of the palace of Agrippa II!
