Ants are trying to take over our property. There are mounds and mounds of their homes outside. I just saw the neighbor out killing ants. And my husband also declared war now that we are finding them in the house, and not just typical areas like the kitchen. Oh no. We have ants in our closet! I find myself shaking out each garment before putting it on. My husband didn’t think of that and uh…kept finding ants biting him all day long. (Insert muffled laughter here.)
Maybe it’s these ants that inspired my daughter Grace’s comment. The other day we were driving through lots of road construction. I was more nervous than usual trying to keep up with all of the changed lanes and exits. From the back seat of the van Grace exclaimed, “Look at the huge ant hill!” Her voice contained all the awe possible.
My first thought was that I couldn’t look because I wanted to stay on the road. Then I thought, “Wow it must be pretty big if she can see it from the van.” Curiosity got the best of me. I turned my head to look. It was the road construction dirt pile! Yep I’d say that would be the world largest ant hill!

We have had an ant invasion too but they only got as far as the conservatory. We filled in a small crack where they had been getting in and that stopped them. It seems to have been a bumper year for ants here – wet weather followed by a warm spell.
I had this same problem with ants a few months ago and we got rid of them. And then they came back again. But the second go round, we finally did get rid of them. They are relentless and once they find their way in, they will try to take over.
Esther- We have found that diatomaceous earth works awesome on ant hills! We put it around the perimeter of our house when the “critters” start coming in. It has to be reapplied if it gets wet (rain or otherwise) but it kills the ants and other buggies. 🙂
The great news is that if your dog or child eats it they will be just fine! In fact, we sprinkle it on our dog, goat, and chicken feed as a natural dewormer.
We get ours at Boyce Feed Store in bulk. You can get it at any nursery and probably at Tractor Supply (but I haven’t verified that one yet).
Hope this helps!
Die fire ants die!!!! 🙂
We have been battling ants, too. I think I’m winning this summer! 😉
You should see the ant hills in Africa!
