The honesty of children

My daughter and I were lying on the floor talking and cutting up.  After a bit of silence she sits up a little and asks, “Mom, how old are you?”

I heaved a big sigh, “I’m forty.”

“Mom, I think you’re very, very pretty.”  I gave her a puzzled look wondering where such a comment was coming from.  “Really, I think you’re very, very pretty.”

“Well, thank you,” I finally smiled and accepted the compliment.

“But I think you were much prettier when you were younger.”

I burst out laughing!  I couldn’t help it!  My laughter worried her a little.  When I could speak once more I gently told  her that yes most people look better when they are young, but it would be kinder to leave that part off when giving someone a compliment!  I thought it was funny.

Looks like she joins some of her grand- and great-parents in honesty–or should we call it tactlessness? At any rate, totally without malice. When she (and you) gets a little older she will probably say as I have been told, “You look really good . . . for your age.”

    Funny! Forty is young…you just don’t know it yet. :) (Can’t believe you’re 40, though.) I remember 22? I remember shopping for wedding dresses for you–size 1, I believe!

  • I love children’s honesty. You know, even though we all were prettier when younger, I wouldn’t want to go back in time. I like agining.
I think you look pretty good for 40.
