The DVD player in our van has not worked well for two years. It’s not that it wouldn’t work at all, but it would spit the DVD out three fourths of the time. I would sit there and have to keep putting it back in until it would cooperate. Then it would only play short DVDs like Veggie Tales. We joked around that it was a Christian DVD player.
But we have a two day road trip coming up this summer, and I was determined to get a new player that actually worked for the trip no matter the cost. My sanity was at stake here! So I made an appointment and left my van at a Christian Brothers Automotive. About mid day I called the guy to see if he was able to fix it.
“Well, you see, I can’t find anything wrong with it.”
I explained again that it worked sporadically, but not on any full length movies.
“I can try it again,” he said doubtfully, “I mean I can put a new DVD player in it for you if you want, and it would run you between $400 and $450, but if I were you I’d just get a DVD cleaner and see if it runs better for you.” And then he laughed at me. I mean a deep belly laugh. I had never heard of a DVD cleaner.
A few days later I made it to the store. Sure enough for $5.99 I purchased a DVD cleaner. I didn’t believe for one second that this would fix my two year problem. I took it home and spent 15 minutes trying to get the DVD player to take the cleaner because it of course kept spitting the thing out. Eventually, however, it did run through a cleaning cycle. I popped it out, and then put in a full length movie that hadn’t worked on the player for two years. It worked perfectly.
Yep, I’m feeling pretty foolish, but so thankful for the honesty of those at Christian Brothers. This would have been a perfect time to take advantage of someone, but they sent me home with a $6 fix and charged me nothing for their trouble!
